Arsenal star reveals he was close to summer Everton move

Lyon, Marseille and West Ham were among the teams linked with Giroud earlier this year, but he named another of the sides credited with an interest - Everton - as a club he came so close to joining.

Giroud joined Arsenal from Montpellier after Euro 2012 to replace Robin Van Perise who left to join Manchester United.

Giroud claims he chose to prolong his Arsenal career because of his affiliation with the club.

Arsenal are reportedly preparing a move for Ademola Lookman and believe the Everton and England U21 starlet will be tempted to leave Goodison Park.

Discussing his decision to stay, Giroud told French TV station Canal Plus: "I had the opportunity to leave [Arsenal]".

"But I made the best choice I think". Against Hajduk Split, Lookman flashed with brilliance at times but faded out of the game late. Everton have started the season dismally despite breaking the bank over the summer with new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson, only winning twice in seven games and sitting at 16th place in the Premier League. I didn't want to return to France.

The 19-year-old spent one full season at the League One outfit before Everton beat a host of Premier League rivals to secure his signature last January.

Giroud was speaking to the media ahead of France's final World Cup qualifier against Belarus. As per the provided Sun link, Everton would be reluctant to sell him but an offer worth 15 million pounds ($20million) could be very tempting for the Merseysiders.

"I'm happy in England, it's nothing against those clubs but a return to France is possible one day".
