Gajendra Chauhan, ex-FTII chairman: My good wishes are with Anupam Kher

The post remained vacant for at least seven months after Gajendra Chauhan demitted office in March this year, following constant protest by film fraternity and students of the institute. Several political leaders had also visited FTII campus in Pune, during the politically charged agitation by the students.

Kher has a long and varied experience in acting in films as well as theatre.

On Wednesday, Chauhan, however, extended his good wishes to Anupam.

"My good wishes are with him", he added. What happens is that when somebody is given a post, then there are a lot of options behind it.

Kher will now head the FTII Society which is responsible for electing Governing Council and Academic Council which then takes decisions on important matters pertaining to administrative and academic matters concerning the institute. He also pointed out that there's a possible "conflict of interest' angle involved as Kher himself runs his own acting school". I think it is a great honour and a great sense of responsibility as well. "I will go with a clear mind and do as much work as I can".

Chauhans appointment in 2015 had sparked an outrage among the students of the premier film institute. It ended with a 139-day strike by students, who protested against what they felt was a "politically-motivated appointment". Today, whatever respect I have has been earned through my hard work and blessings of the Almighty, I couldn't have asked for more. The CAG report, which was submitted in Parliament has a line, 'The best work at FTII was done under the chairmanship of Gajendra Chauhan.' That's like a certification of my work. "I want to interact with students to understand their requirements, and along with faculties, I would be helping students for their betterment", said Anupam, a vociferous BJP supporter.
