Minister's convoy runs over minor; UP CM announces 5 lakh compensation

Later, the villagers placed the body of the victim on the road and blocked the road for an hour. The incident happened near Colonelganj in Gonda district.

The eye-witnesses and the boy's family claimed that the child was knocked down by a vehicle from the minister's convoy.

An eight-year-old boy was killed on Saturday when the convoy of a minister in northern India allegedly ran him over, police said. According to a report by the NDTV, the father is said to have spotted the minister in one of the cars that was decorated with garlands.

According to sources, the auto belonged to UP minister Om Prakash Rajbhar. The minister sped away. He also said that strict action will be taken against those involved in the death of the child.

In a statement issued later in evening the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased and asked director general of police to initiate probe into the matter. It was only after the police intervened that the villagers removed the blockade. "The guards put a break to their vehicle but they went away", said the child's father Vishwanath.

Om Prakash heads the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, which is an ally of Uttar Pradesh's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. He has even directed the office of the director general of police to submit a detailed report about the accident. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against unknown people for now.

"Shiva Goswami died when he was hit by a vehicle in minister Om Prakash Rajbhar's fleet in Colonelganj area of the city", The Indian Express quoted Additional Superintendent of Police (Gonda) Hridesh Kumar as saying.
