And in the waning hours of last week, as he struggled to retain control of the business in the wake of allegations first reported by The New York Times, Harvey Weinstein fired off an email to his brother and other board members asserting that they knew about the payoffs, according to people who spoke on the condition of anonymity about the confidential communication.

STORY: Has anyone fallen faster than Harvey Weinstein? .

But with investigations into Weinstein's behavior brewing in NY, he may be better off staying in the USA for the time being.

Weinstein's lawyer tells The Hollywood Reporter his client is preparing to sue the New York Times.

A woman who once interviewed with Harvey Weinstein for a nanny job has gone public with her story about how he interviewed her wearing only boxer shorts and an undershirt. Other women say Weinstein sexually harassed them in exchange for acting roles.

NY detectives already investigated Weinstein once, in 2015, when an Italian model said the studio executive grabbed her breasts and groped her. Detectives set up a sting where they recorded a conversation between the woman and Weinstein while he tried to persuade her to come into his hotel room. "He was using his power to get sex", she wrote. "We can from this create a new paradigm where producers, managers, executives and assistants and everyone who has in the past shrugged and said "well, that's just Harvey/Mr X/insert name here" will realize that we in numbers can affect real change", she said.

Weinstein made his impromptu statement on his way out of his 22-year-old daughter Remy's house.

In the wake of the scandal, Weinstein - who has denied numerous allegations against him - is believed to have checked into rehab, and his wife Georgina Chapman has left him, while he has also been slammed by big names in Hollywood, including Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, and Dame Judi Dench.

Other figures to speak out against Weinstein include Barack Obama, Benedict Cumberbatch and Leonardo DiCaprio. According to People, the LAPD had responded to a "family disturbance call" at the home earlier in the day.

Weinstein's wife Georgina Chapman announces she is leaving him and that her priority is her young children. Prime Minister Theresa May says a decision about the honour would not lie with Downing Street.

The contract came up for renewal just as Ambra Battilana, an Italian model, reported to the police that Harvey Weinstein had groped her during a work meeting at his Manhattan office. Weinstein was not there when officers arrived.

In response to the lengthy allegations made against Weinstein in the New Yorker and New York Times pieces, a spokesperson for Weinstein said, "Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein". The NYPD does not provide further details.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' board said it would hold a special meeting Saturday to discuss the allegations against Weinstein and what, if any, course of action it should take. It describes the allegations against Weinstein as "repugnant" and "abhorrent".
