Parents win murder appeal in case that divided India

The Allahabad High Court's order acquitting Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, giving them the benefit of doubt in the Aarushi Talwar murder case, almost nine years after their teenage daughter and domestic help were killed, has further strengthened doubts that were raised initially over the investigation of the case and the 2013 judgment that had sentenced the couple to life imprisonment.

Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, writer and co-producer of "Talvar" - a film on the 2008 Aarushi Talwar murder case - said he was relieved and overwhelmed that the teenaged girl's parents were acquitted in the case on Thursday.

# The dentist couple is likely to walk out of the Dasna jail by Friday.

Aarushi was found with her throat slit in her Noida residence on May 2008.

He said both the judges found the charges against them baseless and there was no strength in the allegations of the CBI.

"The law presumes innocence until guilt is established beyond reasonable doubt".

Pronouncing their verdict in a packed court room, justices Narayana and Mishra said, "From the facts and evidence on record, we find neither the circumstances nor evidence are consistent, and circumstances did not complete a chain showing involvement of appellants in the incident".

Reacting to the verdict, the CBI said it would study the Allahabad High Court order and "decide the future course of action". "In fact, they will have to answer a number of questions in the Supreme Court as to why they did not investigate properly".

It is to recall that CBI court at Ghaziabad had convicted the two accused Aarushi's parents Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar for double murder and had sentenced them rigorous imprisonment for life. "Only we know how these 9 years have been to us".

He said the High Court verdict "does not say that the Talwars didn't do it" but that there was not enough evidence against them.
