People go to Twitter to see if Facebook and Instagram are down

Users in some parts of the United States, Europe, India and Canada were unable to access their accounts on Wednesday as the social networking website faced technical issues.

Website Downdetector, which tracks technology failures online, indicated tens of thousands of problems were reported on both sites between 3pm and 6pm GMT on Wednesday (early Thursday AEDT). Outage Report is also monitoring the problem, which it says started at 11.11 a.m ET.

Down Detectors has recorded a huge spike in reports of Facebook outages today. The website's map shows heavy outages in the U.S., Peru, Europe and other regions spread from Canada to Australia.

Down Detector also says almost 2,500 Instagram users have reported that they're having issues with the popular photo sharing service.

And its users made sure to poke fun at the social network's rivals.

Facebook and Instagram have become irreplaceable platforms in society, respectively hosting over two billion and over 700 million people per month.

"We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible".
