Ukraine elected to UN Human Rights Council

Altogether, the UN General Assembly elected 15 members, four of which from Africa, four from Asia and Pacific, two from Eastern Europe, three from Latin America and two from Western Europe and other states.

"This victory is a ringing endorsement of Pakistan's strong commitment to human rights", an elated Maleeha Lodhi, Pakistan's permanent representative to the United Nations, said in a post-election interview with APP.

We will bring to the Council the same principled, pragmatic and consultative approach that distinguished our term on the UN Security Council in 2013-14. Pakistan polled 151 votes, when 97 were needed.

The United Nations in a release, said all would serve three-year terms beginning on 1 January 2018.

Congratulating the nation on its diplomatic success, Maleeha said that despite opposition by the United States and her allies Pakistan had managed to become the member of the human rights council.

Today's election is yet another example of why the Human Rights Council (HRC) lacks credibility and must be reformed in order to be saved.

Punjab Minister for Human Rights and minorities Affairs Khalil Tahir Sandhu said in a statement that the entire nation was feel proud that Pakistan had been elected a member of the International Human Rights council.

There were five candidates contesting for four Asia-Pacific seats on the Council.

Newly elected to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council are Afghanistan, Angola, Australia, Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Qatar, Senegal, Slovakia, Spain and Ukraine.

"This election marks a humbling moment of paramount importance to Nepal since it reflects the worldwide community's acknowledgement of Nepal's passionate efforts and accomplishments in the field of promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms", said Durga Prasad Bhattarai, Nepal's Permanent Representative at the United Nations. Besides the Maldives, Malaysia too had to return home without a membership seat getting just 129 votes in favour.

"Pakistan's election gives the lie to those who claim that Pakistan is isolated". "Pakistan", she said, "is humbled by and grateful for the overwhelming support received from the world community". It meets at the UN Office at Geneva.
