Zachary Levi to Play Title Role in DC's Shazam!

Based on book sales, the character was the most popular superhero of the 1940s, outselling even Superman. Other actors considered for the role included John Cena, Derek Theler, Zane Holtz, Billy Magnussen, and Jake McDorman.

Zachary Levi will be summoning the legendary powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury as Captain Marvel in the upcoming DCEU feature film, Shazam! By 1991, DC had acquired all rights to the characters. The character was bought by DC in 1971, when he was renamed, due to Marvel's ownership of the name Captain Marvel. The $15 million horror sequel has earned a big $303 million worldwide since opening in August.

Zachary Levi has said the magic word.

Levi isn't kidding about the gym part. I am beside myself with gratitude, not only for this opportunity, but also the incredible outpouring of love and support from so many of you out there in the world. That being the case, the young actor playing Billy Batson still needs to be cast. He also has superhero credentials and can be seen next week in Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok as Fandral, one of Thor's companions. And given recent statements by Warner Bros. and DC executives about having some movies less connected, will Shazam! be a stand-alone DC film or connected to other movies?

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was previously announced in the role of Shazam's nemesis Black Adam and is set to appear in a spinoff movie focusing on that character.

No release date has been scheduled for the film, but it's expected that filming will begin in February 2018.
