BMW USA Announces Price for the all-new BMW M5

This year's Los Angeles Motor Show 2017 sees the first substantial change to the model range in the form of the release of the BMW i8 Roadster.

Inside, the 2019 BMW i8 gets the latest version of BMW's iDrive infotainment system with an 8.8-inch touchscreen. "If you're playing in that segment with the very expensive cars, it's always [that] you have to have the newest one".

The new BMW i8 Coupe accelerates a little faster with 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 4.4 seconds and it also has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). In the USA, i8 sales are down 72 percent through the first 10 months of 2017, with just 364 sold. Of course it is also coupled with the electric drive system at 141 hp that brings that total power output to a respectable 369 horsepower. The rear window doubles as a wind deflector can also be closed or opened independently without the roof. The battery pack is upgraded to 11.6kWh over 7.1kWh. The automaker claims the number of driving situations where the electric motor is exclusively responsible for powering the vehicle has been significantly increased, with the combustion engine only being brought into play when accelerating hard. The electric motors now produce 105kW/143bhp and can drive the auto to 105kmph on pure battery power which can be increased to 120kmph at a push of a (eDrive) button. A six-speed automatic transmission runs the engine's power to the rear wheels while the electric motor has a two-speed automatic gearbox turning the front wheels.

With the eDrive mode engaged, you can now travel at up to 120 km/h purely on the electric batteries, but range, while improved, is still just over 50 km (33 miles). Top speed remains limited at 155 miles per hour in true German fashion.

Not that they were much use, but the rear side windows are ditched in the Roadster (it's a two-seater), as is the liftback which turns in to a rather long engine cover, and the interior gets a bit of a makeover (as does that in the 2018 Coupe).

With the addition of the folding roof mechanism and structural reinforcements, the i8 Roadster weighs 1595 kilograms, or around 60kg more than the coupe model.

Both can be ordered with Tera World Copper interior trim, which is new to the i8, and features a cloth and leather upholstery combination in a two-tone (Amido/E-Copper) colour scheme. New color schemes being offered include E-Copper metallic and Donington Grey metallic, both with Frozen Grey metallic accents.

Before we look at the new Roadster, let's jump into the guts of this newly-updated i8.
