Boat capsizes in Vijayawada, 16 dead, 10 Missing

Vijayawada: The dead bodies of the tourists were killed after their boat capsized in Krishna river near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh on Nov 12, 2017.

The incident occurred at Ibrahimpatnam Ferry Ghat.

Members of the Ongole Walkers Club had travelled to old Amaravati to take an auspicious Karthika dip in the Krishna River and perform pujas at the ancient Amareswara Temple. As many as 20 passengers wearing life jackets were brought ashore with the help of trained swimmers and local fishermen.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and Krishna district authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation to trace the missing people.

The tourists, majority hailing from Ongole town in Prakasam district of the state, were returning to Pavitra Sangam for performing some religious rituals at the end of their day-long trip to Bhavani Island.

China Rajappa, who was supervising rescue operations at the accident spot, announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. Overload is suspected to be the cause of the accident.

"Many of the tourists got trapped under the overturned boat and died of suffocation", said one of them. They inquired with the APTDC regarding the availability of a boat, but were told that the boat service had been stopped due to poor light in the evening. YSR Congress Party President YS Jaganmohan Reddy also expressed his grief, and said that the official machinery should speed up the rescue operation.

Tourism Minister Akhila Priya ordered probe into the incident.
