Chevrolet unveils all-new Corvette ZR1

"Its unprecedented performance puts all other global supercars on notice that the ZR1 is back", said Mark Reuss, executive vice president for Global Product Development at Chevrolet.

The previous-generation 'Vette ZR1 debuted in 2009 and was produced until 2013.

Using the current Z06 as a base, Chevrolet has upgraded the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine from 641bhp to 744bhp through the use of a new supercharger with 52 per cent more displacement than the Z06's.

The new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will be the most powerful Corvette ever made with top speeds of 210 miles per hour and a 755 horsepower engine. For its application in the fifth-gen model, it gets General Motors' (GM) first application of a dual-injection system which features both direction injection and supplemental port injection. The power is channeled through the familiar Corvette seven-speed manual - or, in a first for ZR1s, an eight-speed automatic with manual-mode paddle-shifters.

Inside: details like a carbon fiber-trimmed steering wheel highlight the 2019 Corvette ZR1. The nose of the ZR1, meanwhile, has been heavily redesigned to provide additional airflow for the engine and cooling systems. A new carbon fiber "halo" hood rises high and is open in the center in order to clear the bigger supercharger and intercooler. The aero packages feature stanchion-mounted wings.

A low wing package decreases downforce in comparison, but it's with this package that the claimed 210mph top speed can be achieved. But for track enthusiasts, a "High Wing" option is available, which plonks a larger two-way adjustable wing on the car's back, giving it extra downforce to keep it pressed into a track - likely something cooked up during its extensive testing on the Nurburgring. Also optional is the high wing, which increases downforce by an estimated 431kg.

"As the highest-performing Corvette ever, the ZR1's design supports its capability in every way", says exterior design manager Kirk Bennion.

But the auto will still be able to achieve its highest top speed with the standard "Low Wing", which will provide less down force but will also allow the vehicle to push more easily though the air. You also get special chassis tuning, Magnetic Ride Control and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber.

A new Sebring Orange Design Package will make it virtually impossible to ignore the new Corvette ZR1. This design package also includes body-coloured brake calipers, rocker and splitter accent stripes, seat belts and stitching, as well as exclusive bronze aluminum interior trim.

Want one? The 2019 ZR1 will go on sale in spring next year. Chevy didn't announce pricing, but it will probably come in at just over $100,000, continuing Corvette's pattern of offering bonkers performance for a relative song.
