EA Buys Titanfall And Its Developer, Respawn; New Titanfall Game Coming

The news comes just weeks after the publisher shuttered Visceral Games. EA acquiring the studio could well propel Titanfall to new heights, though many fear that it could also see the game become a vehicle for loot boxes, microtransactions and other such divisive EA strategies.

Titanfall 2 is one of the most critically-acclaimed first-person shooters in recent years, though its sales suffered as a result of its release coinciding with Battlefield 1. It may also end up shelling out a further $140 million before 2022 if Respawn hits certain targets and milestones. Set up by Jason West and Vince Zampella after their high-profile firings from Activision, the independent studio has now been bought by EA for $151 million in cash, as well as up to $164 million in long-term equity over the next four years. "Our longtime partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world".

EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that the Titanfall franchise embodies the publisher's goal of delivering "extraordinary and innovative new experiences", and that "with the Respawn team joining EA, we have exciting plans to accomplish even more fantastic things in the future". "We see the need for bigger resources to make bigger games". "It doesn't change the future of Titanfall". Titanfall 2 was tremendously received a year ago despite poor sales which are widely pinned on the timing of the launch.

"While it wasn't necessary, going with EA made a lot of sense", Zampella said.

Respawn staff have spent the past few weeks exchanging whispers about a potential sale, two sources said, although there was no concrete news until the studio informed employees about the deal in a meeting today. "This is a great next step for Respawn, EA, and our players".

Respawn will join EA's Worldwide Studios organization, a global creative collective of leading game development studios bringing to life an unmatched portfolio of top games and services across all major platforms.
