But there was no lack of quality on display in a match that was more entertaining than the scoreline suggested, as the in-form Leroy Sane starred for Germany and struck the woodwork with the best effort of the first half.

Tonight's friendly against the world champions will then be followed by the visit of Brazil on Tuesday, kick-off 8pm.

Gareth Southgate has admitted England's set-up is not at the same stage as Germany's, and said it will take time for players from the youth teams to break into the senior side.

"I'll find out who played well tonight (for the Under-21s), who warrants the decision, and liaise with Aidy (Boothroyd) on that and go from there".

"We had two or three very good attacks in the first half, and the defence was well organised by Mats (Hummels)".

"There will be a lot of these players that have experience together in the U21s over the years".
