Google Maps and Search will soon tell you wait times at restaurants

If weird food trends (cronut, anyone?) have taught us anything it's that people are prepared to wait a long time for a seat at a restaurant, so whether you're visiting a popular local eatery or Time Out's latest gastro-pick, you're faced with two choices. And while businesses in general have been supported for awhile to show wait times within Google Search, restaurants have been missing up until now.

Google announced today it will soon roll out a new feature to Google Search, followed by Google Maps, that will show you the estimated wait times for area restaurants. One benefit to this is that you'll get estimated wait times for each hour of the day the restaurant is open, allowing you to plan ahead and potentially skip the line altogether. Google predicts it will be able to offer these wait times for nearly a million restaurants worldwide when the update is completed. The information will be added to the Google Maps app in the near future. To calculate wait times, Google analyzes patterns of customer visits over the last several weeks. The instant insight into wait times is part of a growing trend since Yelp and Nowait partnered earlier this year to deliver similar information. This isn't for restaurants requiring reservations, but the walk-in restaurants.
