India to spray Delhi amid smog emergency

An irked green panel also imposed a ban on the entry of diesel trucks more than 10 years old and said no vehicle from ouside or within Delhi will be permitted to transport any construction material.

The "emergency" under Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) came into force in Delhi-NCR on Thursday with weather officials saying that change in wind direction is set to further worsen the air quality of Delhi on Friday.

The odd-even rule launched past year by the AAP government in Delhi required vehicles with odd and even numbers to run on alternate days, with the view to limit movement of vehicles, and consequently reduce air pollution.

India suspended classes at 6,000 schools for a week in the capital city of Delhi due to air pollution, according to a Thursday report.

The rule applied for 15 days.

"I'd like to assure people that the central government shall do everything possible to bring about an improvement in air quality in Delhi and the national capital region", Federal Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said as the authorities faced criticism for failing to take steps to fight a yearly problem.

According to AQI data released by CPCB for 40 cities, Lucknow's air was under "severe" category with the concentration of PM2.5 - the finest and most hazardous particulate matter - at 430 micrograms per cubic meter of air against the permissible limit of 60 micrograms per cubic meter of air. The day temperatures is likely to rise slightly.

Kejriwal said the one month period from the mid-October to mid-November, when farmers burn the stubble, "the whole of north India and not just Delhi turns into a gas chamber".

"All of us (North Indian states) will have to keep politics aside and work together to tackle this huge problem of pollution", he said.

India's capital New Delhi is restricting auto use to tackle toxic levels of air pollution, which have already forced the government to shut schools for the rest of the week. The three civic bodies are yet to implement parking fee hike, but Delhi Metro has chose to increase train capacity by carrying out 186 additional trips from Thursday. "Things may improve by Saturday", he said.
