Israel Downs Syrian Spy Drone over Golan Heights

Israel used a Patriot missile to shoot down a drone approaching the Golan Heights on the border with Syria on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces said.

"The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) intercepted a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) that attempted to infiltrate Israeli airspace in the Golan Heights using a Patriot missile", the statement read. A military source later said it was unclear whether the UAV was indeed Russian-made.

The unmanned aerial vehicle was manufactured in Russian Federation, representative of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Jonathan Conricus told Sputnik. "We consider the Syrian regime responsible for every shooting and violation of sovereignty, and call on it to restrain all elements operating from its territory".

"We will not allow the Shi'ite axis to establish Syria as its forefront base", Lieberman said.

According to Israel, the aerial vehicle was manufactured by Iran and operated by its ally, Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shia militia.

The Golan, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 conflict, has seen spillover violence from the Syrian civil war.

The investigation of the incident earlier today (Saturday), in which an unmanned aerial vehicle from Syria was intercepted as it approached Israeli airspace, indicates that the UAV was actually manufactured in Russian Federation.
