J&K: 1 soldier, terroist killed in Kulgam encounter

An Army jawan and a militant were today killed in an encounter in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir even as security forces were engaged in a counter insurgency operation in Pulwama district.

The directions were issued by the authorities after encounter ensued between militants and security forces at two places in south Kashmir - Naubugh in Qazigund in Kulgam and Tral in Pulwama.

According to IANS, as soon as the security forces cordoned off Nowbug village in Qazigund area following information about the presence of the militants, they were fired at, triggering the fighting. A gunfight began early Tuesday after militants opened fire at security forces during a cordon and search operation.

During the fierce gun fight, a militant belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen was killed. One soldier and an SOG cop were also injured in the encounter, the officer added.

The operation was going on when last reports came in. Internet services have been snapped in south Kashmir and some parts of north Kashmir due to security reasons.

Indian army soldiers patrol near Saimoh village, in Tral area, about 45 Kilometres south of Srinagar.

A hideout of Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit was busted in the operation, said the official.

A police official said Bhat was from the volatile Palhalan area.
