A live-action "Star Wars" TV series also is being developed for a streaming service that Disney is launching to capture online audiences, Iger said.

The Walt Disney company announced that it will produce a new trilogy of the Stars War saga and will be directed by Rian Johnson, highlighted the media today.

Details about this upcoming trilogy is unknown.

While The Last Jedi is still a few weeks away, the deal is a good sign that Disney is happy with Johnson's work on Episode VIII.

In a statement, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says, "We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi".

"He's a creative force and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career". Such a massive and lucrative undertaking would surely go beyond the basic idea of a new trilogy.

It turns out, Disney and Lucasfilm already have an ambitious new plan in place for the future of world's most beloved sci-fi franchise.

"The Last Jedi", which follows on from 2015's hit film "The Force Awakens" and is expected to focus on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), will be in theaters on December 15.

"We can't wait to continue with this new series of films".
