The fifth and final time that he did win at the Monte Carlo street circuit, he piloted a Ferrari F2001, chassis 211.

The F2001 is described as the most important modern Formula 1 race auto and among the most significant competition cars in any collection worldwide.

The German motor-racing legend ended up winning the 2001 F1 Championship, with chassis 211 playing a pivotal role in his victory.

Sotheby's didn't define "modern" when they made that claim, as Autoblog notes, but suffice to say that it's in a different class than your ultra-rare, 1 of 1 surviving one-off early F1 racers that go for even more obscene amounts of cash.

In addition to Schumacher's auto at auction in NY sold a portrait of Chinese leader Mao Zedong written by American artist Andy Warhol for a total of 32.4 million dollars.

A portion of proceeds from the sale (after auction costs) will be donated by the former owner to Michael Schumacher's Keep Fighting Foundation.

Schumacher, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion who tragically lives in a vegetative state since a skiing accident in late 2013, used the very Ferrari F2001 sold by Sotheby's Thursday evening to record his fourth Formula 1 World Championship in 2001.

In 2001 setup, the Ferrari had a 3-litre engine which developed nearly 900bhp while weighing just 600kg.

Francis Bacon's Three Studies of George Dyer - appearing at auction for the first time - was the most expensive item selling for £29.2m ($38.6m).

NEW YORK-Michael Schumacher's Grand Prix-Winning Ferrari sold for $7.5 million in NY on Thursday, setting an auction record for a modern-era Formula One vehicle, Sotheby's said.
