Providence Police Shoot Suspect: Watch the Officer-Involved Shooting

"We had police officers from Providence and we had troopers from the State Police involved in the shooting, so we had multiple".

Less than two hours after Morgan allegedly stole the cruiser, officers engaged in a chase in Providence that culminated in officers firing dozens of gunshots on Interstate 95.

Police said the man killed in the pickup truck was 32-year-old Joseph Santos and his passenger was Christine Demers.

One man was killed and a woman was injured in the shootout that happened around 10:45 a.m. Police have not identified them.

"As that vehicle is driving in a very aggressive manner, this vehicle is now being used as a weapon in an attempt to flee and it is hitting other cars, it is ramming at least one other auto", Col. Clements said as he walked reporters through the events leading up to Santos' death. He said no weapons were found in the pickup truck. The truck sat riddled with bullets on the road Thursday afternoon as police swarmed over the highway looking for shell casings.

The cruiser was taken around 9 a.m. Thursday during a traffic stop on Route 146, police said.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré later confirmed that one person was dead and a second victim, a female, was in critical condition after the two were shot by police, following an earlier theft of a State Police cruiser, the Journal reported. Pare said they're reviewing footage from body cameras the responding officers were wearing.

State Police Col. Ann Assumpico said a trooper had been driving a cuffed suspect to court in the cruiser and stopped at a crash scene to assist, the Journal reported.

Donald Morgan, the fugitive wanted for stealing a police cruiser in Rhode Island on Thursday, has been found after more than a day on the run. He was being transported to court and was left alone and handcuffed in the vehicle when the trooper stepped out to check on an accident, she said.
