Sadio Mane suffers recurrence of hamstring injury

The Teranga Lions became the third African country to qualify for the 2018 World Cup thanks to the victory in the replayed match. The former midfielder will be hoping he can inspire the team to achieve similarly superlative heights next year in Russian Federation.

Mane played 90 minutes as Senegal topped CAF group D as a result of the away win in Polokwane, a fixture that had to be replayed after the referee who took charge of the controversial first one in 2016 was later banned from football over corruption charges.

After a bright opening from the hosts, it was an incisive piece of passing that put Senegal in the lead on 12 minutes.

Senegal stunned the world by beating World Cup holders France in its first ever game at the global finals in 2002, and if the nation is to produce performances to match that at Russian Federation 2018, it is likely that Liverpool's Sadio Mane will be the catalyst.

Sadio Mane found some space on the right and his defence-splitting ball was flawless for Sakho to slide the ball past the masked Itumeleng Khune in the Bafana goal.

South Africa came even close soon after when Lebogang Manyama swept a low cross against the crossbar and Senegal hastily cleared the loose ball.

They were applying constant pressure to the Senegal goal through this period, but the visitors doubled their advantage with a sucker-punch.

Sakho broke clear and crossed to Mane, whose shot was blocked by Khune only for the clearance to hit Mkhize and trickled back into the net.

With Mane having struggled with injury absences at various points in his Liverpool career to date, the club is being understandably cautious with his fitness and want no risks of re-injury, especially in unnecessary circumstances such as Senegal's "dead rubber" qualifier.
