SAP and Microsoft bring S/4 HANA to Azure

"Our partnership with Microsoft and SAP is essential to us continuing to deliver on that commitment". The Redmond-based firm announced Tuesday it has engineered SAP's cloud and enterprise resource planning software to run on its Azure cloud, as it bids to steal some of the limelight from Amazon Web Service Inc.'s cloud conference this week.

The two companies are hoping to show that these internal uses can translate to gaining additional customers for their various cloud and software offerings.

The deal entails SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud being supported on Azure, which permits SAP S/4HANA to run on Microsoft's cloud infrastructure. Microsoft is transforming its internal systems - which include legacy SAP finance applications, and will implement the SAP S/4HANA Finance solution running on Azure. "Their close alignment is an integral part of advancing our technical architecture and cloud strategy to better serve our customers around the world", said Mike Hirt, vice president and chief information officer at Columbia Sportswear Company.

The collaboration represents an expansion of the two companies' 20-year partnership. SAP Ariba already is using Azure and looking into using it within its procurement applications, according to the joint announcement.

And this year SAP said that its customers could run its software on AWS, as well as Azure and Google's Cloud Platform in preview. "While most cloud vendors offer single server migration capabilities, "Azure Migrate" helps you through the journey of migrating an entire multi-server application", the post read. For customers of Microsoft Premier Support, "SAP is able to engage Microsoft on behalf of the customer", per the FAQ.

The companies also said they're using each other's products.

In addition, Microsoft will deploy SAP S/4HANA on Azure to help run its internal finance processes.

SAP also plans to move about a dozen of its own internal business critical systems to Azure.
