Stabbing Confirmed at Mall of America

The stabbing at Macy's in the Mall of America Sunday night was an isolated incident and the mall is committed to the safety of its customers, said officials with the Mall of America in a statement Monday. Police say one victim was stabbed after confronting a man attempting to steal his belongings from the dressing room.

Jolene Situma said she was in the Macy's store when the incident occurred in the men's section.

Police say the suspect is now in custody.

This is a breaking story. A second person was also stabbed trying to stop the attempted robbery and stabbing.

"There were a couple of other family members who went to assist the victim, and in doing so, another person suffered a knife wound", Potts said.

While the Macy's store closed early, the Mall of America stayed open and was not placed on lockdown.

Maddie Schwieters tells KARE-TV she was in line to see Santa when she ran toward the commotion nearby and saw two people on the floor.

Police Chief Jeff Potts said, "There have been two adult males that have been taken to the hospital and have what are described as non-life-threatening injuries". "By the time we got to the main area - the men's department is to the right - more police started running in with their guns drawn".
