The Amazon Fire TV Stick 'Basic Edition' gets rid of Alexa

Amazon's Fire TV Stick With Alexa Voice Remote, which launched in the United States in October 2016 before making its way to the UK, Germany, and Japan this April, earned an "excellent" rating in PCMag's review, nabbing props for its low price, voice search capabilities, and fast performance. Users can also set the stick's default menu language as Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Italian, German, or English. In addition, the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition will be coming soon to Brazil and Mexico.

Amazon has launched a new version of the Fire TV Stick for the global market, called the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition. Amazon recently launched Prime Video around the world (both with and without the regular Prime service), so the device is a way to get folks on it without the need for a computer or smartphone.

The media player is powered by a quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM "for a fast and fluid streaming experience", while it includes 8GB of storage to download apps and games, over 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

Customers can buy the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition starting today for $49.99. The only major difference here is that the Basic Edition doesn't have support for Alexa voice commands.

From what I could gather, the Basic Edition doesn't exist to replace 2016's Fire TV Stick, but as an option for the rest of the world. The stick reportedly runs on Fire OS 5, which is based on the three-year-old Android Lollipop.

Like previous versions of the Fire TV Stick, the Basic Edition is very easy to use. It's only natural that the Fire TV Stick device becomes readily available in more regions. Previously, Prime Video was limited to smartphones, tablets, the web and smart TVs, but now customers can plug this HDMI dongle into any TV and start streaming. So for now, it can offer Fire TV devices without Alexa in those (many) markets that are not yet supported by Alexa.

Pricing varies in each locality.

The new Basic Edition is available in over 100 countries and territories.
