The confusing new reason Gareth Southgate hasn't picked Jack Wilshere for England

The confusing new reason Gareth Southgate hasn't picked Jack Wilshere for England

Arsenal hero Lee Dixon fears Jack Wilshere is suffering because of his versatility.

But Hodgson denies he has even discussed bringing in Wilshere, who he worked with in his time as England boss.

Hodgson believes Wilshere "has the creative quality his side needs to climb out of the bottom three in the Premier League", and he's also cautiously optimistic that the prospect of playing regularly at Selhurst Park could persuade the 25-year-old to give it a go.

"It's not ideal for Gareth because I'm sure he wanted to try a few things out and he's had a lot of pull-outs", Dixon said on ITV.

Wilshere has struggled to hold down a place in the Gunners' starting lineup since returning from a loan at Bournemouth last season after fracturing his leg.

Gareth Southgate has told Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that Jack Wilshere's best position is as a number 10.

Wilshere, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has scored twice in eight appearances for Arsenal but is yet to start in the Premier League.

Wenger has played Wilshere as a No 10 this season.

I think he is a talent and I really respect him as an individual.

"I feel proud to be an Arsenal player - the 1989 side are legends and hopefully one day I can be an Arsenal legend too", said Wilshere, as quoted by The Islington Gazette.

"We need him both internationally and for the Arsenal", the former captain added.

"I am hoping that we are in a position in March where we can pick him".

"I don't think Jack is a ten", Merson told Sky Sports News. The midfielder has suffered so many injuries but now is the time for him to really kick on and break into the first-team to prove he is good enough to play for England again.
