The Top 5 Heading Into The Weekend

The Top 5 Heading Into The Weekend

The second College Football Playoffs rankings released Tuesday night looked very much like the first one released a week ago, although games this weekend could have impact going forward.

The 8-1 Fighting Irish are at No. 3 in the CFP rankings, and also sit third at +700 on the national title odds along with 8-1 Clemson (No. 4 in the CFP rankings).

This weekend, there are two separate matchups between teams ahead of Wisconsin, meaning they are likely to increase at least two spots following this weekend's games, especially with them hosting the 20th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.

8 TCU AT 5 OKLAHOMA (7 P.M., FOX): The new Heisman Trophy frontrunner, OU's Baker Mayfield, and the nation's top-ranked offense face TCU's top-ranked defense. The pairings for the four-team national championship playoff are not determined until the final CFP rankings come out on December 3.

Now ranked No. 8, the undefeated Badgers are the lowest ranked Power-Five team yet to lose a game, behind Georgia, Alabama and Miami.

Washington (8-1) comes in at No. 9, and Auburn (7-2), the highest ranked two-loss team, is No. 10. The other Saturday game with significant ranking ramifications is Notre Dame's game at Miami. That wasn't quite the biggest bolt on the list, however, as Michigan State (7-2) rode its upset of Penn State from No. 24 all the way to No. 12 this week, just behind No. 11 Southern California (8-2).

However, that deserves to be overlooked for any undefeated team in one of the premier conferences in college football, especially with the Big 10, who many thought a team such as Ohio State, Penn State or MI would prevail over.

For the second straight week, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are no. 1 in the College Football Playoff poll.
