Theresa May hails resignation of Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe

Zimbabwean ex-president Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace could face serious trouble if they seek refuge in South Africa, as some rights activists could "hound them for crimes" they allegedly committed in both countries.

Mugabe resigned on Tuesday as MPs were in the process of impeaching him. As Zimbabweans chart the way forward, we pledge our ongoing support for democracy and development in their country.

Lawmakers roared in jubilation and people have begun celebrating in the streets.

The political crisis in Zimbabwe erupted after Mugabe, 93, dismissed Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who has been thought by many to become Mugabe's successor and enjoyed the support of the country's army.

On Thursday, global news agency Reuters quoted a senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) official as saying Zimbabwe's economic growth was threatened by high government spending, an untenable foreign exchange regime and inadequate reforms.

Mnangagwa fled to South Africa in self-imposed exile after he was removed from the post of vice president by Mugabe earlier this month.

Mr Mugabe is expected to attend Friday's inauguration.

"What we need to see now is free, fair democratic elections and above all not a transition from one despotic rule to another".

Van Nieuwkerk said global human rights activists would come hard after Mugabe, 93, and force him to stand trial for the crimes he committed in the 1980s when over 20 000 Zimbabweans were killed in the Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland and parts of Midlands provinces.

"It's time now for a new future and how Robert Mugabe spends the rest of his years is very much a matter for his countrymen".
