Three cups of coffee a day offers 'greatest benefit' to health

While most researchers can not agree on a definitive list to detail the benefits of coffee, they point out that three cups a day is a safe bet.

An editorial by Eliseo Guallar from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Md., says there is no way to know if coffee prevents chronic disease and reduces mortality because there are too many factors to weigh like why people start drinking coffee and what kind of coffee drinks they're drinking.

A review of more than 200 studies found coffee consumption was "more often associated with benefit than harm", adding even people who drank as many as seven cups of coffee were likely to be safe.

It's not really shocking that coffee is one of the most consumed beverages globally - millions of people drink it before starting their day jobs, and they refill their cups throughout the day.

Drinking coffee was consistently linked with a lower risk of death from all causes and from heart disease.

An umbrella review, for the uninitiated, aggregates and synthesizes previous research and studies to generate a clearer understanding of what they all point to. Of those studies, only 17 were clinical trials, and the rest were observational research.

Researchers from Southampton and Edinburgh universities said that drinking coffee seemed safe "within usual patterns of consumption", except in pregnancy and among women who were at risk of a fracture.

Findings from the world's largest study into coffee and its impact on health, published earlier this year, showed it was a "wonderful medicine" and those who consumed it regularly could cheat an early death.

According to research in the past, caffeine consumption has been linked to the body's ability to absorb calcium, which in turn affects bone mineral density, especially in women.

In July, there were two studies that suggested drinking coffee leads to a longer life.

And coffee drinkers may have healthier livers and better glucose control than non-coffee drinkers.
