Amazon Australia Is Officially Here (For Real This Time, No Jokes, OK?)

United States ecommerce giant Amazon launched in Australia overnight with its first party retail and marketplace offer.

Orders will be filled from Amazon's new fulfilment centre in Dandenong South in Melbourne.

Shares of No. 1 electronics retailer Harvey Norman Holdings Ltd are down 7 percent since April, while smaller JB HiFi are off by 6 percent amid fears of competition from Amazon.

Customers are able to enjoy free delivery on eligible orders above $49 that are sold by Amazon, and a one-day delivery service is available in select areas across Australia.

After months of hype, speculation, and delays, Amazon has finally launched its full Australian website, less than three weeks before Christmas.

While Amazon has been busy hiring for its music offering since before June, filling the roles of Music Curator, Senior Music Curator, Senior Marketing Manager, and Head of Digital Music, Amazon Music Unlimited won't launch until early 2018. Still, it's a huge blow to our $16 billion retail sector.

Braeuniger said Amazon will create thousands of new jobs and invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Australia.

Retail categories most likely to be hurt by Amazon's entry include electrical, appliances, apparel and cosmetics, UBS added.

"For Amazon's Marketplace to be successful in Australia, Amazon will need a good product range, including local specialty suppliers".

Amazon's grocery chain, Amazon Fresh, will also not be available at first, though it is expected to open in Australia at some point.

"Amazon had paid no taxes on retail in 23 years, they have never made a profit in retail in 23 years and they never will".

Australia has always been home to Amazon-registered sellers, but until Tuesday they were limited to sending goods offshore because the Seattle conglomerate did not have a warehouse in the country of 24 million people. The result will be an ever-improving customer experience driven by the regular introduction of new products and services that we hope customers will love. Small businesses selling on Amazon Marketplace globally have employed more than 600,000 people to support their Amazon activity.
