Congressional investigators discover more emails related to infamous Trump Jr. meeting

The meeting is of keen interest to Special Counsel Robert Mueller and several Senate and House committees that are investigating whether the Trump campaign worked with Russian Federation to interfere in the 2016 election.

On Wednesday, Dec 6, Donald Trump Jr. testified before the House Intelligence Committee in a closed-door session regarding any direct contact with Russian officials during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. Trump claimed the conversation was protected because it occurred in the presence of a lawyer, Schiff said.

Schiff said that while Trump Jr. admitted speaking to his father about his response to reports on the meeting, he "refused to answer questions about that meeting on the basis a claim of attorney client privilege".

The conversation between Trump Jr. and his father was about a meeting Trump Jr. had at Trump Tower in June 2016 with a Russian lawyerto get "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

"If his father knew about the meeting in advance and either condoned it or encouraged it, that is something [special counsel Robert S. Mueller III] would be very interested in", said Jeffrey Jacobovitz, a white collar criminal defense lawyer who has defended Clinton officials and is now at Arnall Golden Gregory LLP. Trump, Jr. wasn't even on the plane, he was talking to his father through Hope Hicks, to whom Trump the Elder was dictating the statement. It was then that Trump Jr., per the sources, said Clinton's testimony was not the same: she was testifying about the 2012 attack in Benghazi where four Americans were killed.

The meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya was arranged through an exchange of emails between publicist Rob Goldstone and the younger Trump, which Trump Jr. later posted publicly to his Twitter account.

"If it's what you say I love it especially later in the summer", Trump Jr. wrote to the intermediary, in reference to obtaining the compromising information about Clinton.

"We will be following up with his counsel", Schiff concluded.

This is silly. "Attorney-client privilege" shields conversations between attorneys and clients.

Trump Jr., like his father, denies collusion with Russian Federation.

That's the perspective of a high-ranking Democrat on that committee.

The question of whether or not the attorney-client privilege applies to a given situation is often a complicated one, but it is also usually a question that courts end up deciding in favor of maintaining the privilege.

Other lawmakers, Republicans as well as Democrats, say the goal of their investigation is to guarantee the integrity of US elections, not to target Trump and his associates.

Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, one of the Republicans leading the probe, said the interview was "professional" and described Trump "cooperative at all times".

The conversation between Trump Jr. and his father took place in July of this year, around six months after Trump's inauguration, and soon after a July 8 report in The New York Times revealed that Trump Jr. met with a Kremlin-linked lawyer at Trump Tower during the presidential primaries in June 2016.
