Critics react to Trump's tweet on firing Flynn

But absent from Trump's remarks - at least at the first event - was any mention of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

The reports of Strzok's removal came just a day after Mueller's team revealed a plea deal with Michael Flynn, President Trump's former national security adviser. Flynn Jr. also acted briefly as his father's chief of staff during the transition, but was forced to resign after his frequent tweets on conspiracy theories. While Mr. Trump can point to the court documents and say they show no evidence of collusion with Russian Federation, the special counsel's filings so far paint a damning portrait of Mr. Trump's associates.

The special counsel examining alleged Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election removed a top FBI investigator from his team for exchanging text messages with a colleague that expressed anti-Trump views, two US newspapers reported on Saturday. When Mr. Trump fired his F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, in May, he initially cited his handling of the Clinton email investigation as the reason for his dismissal.

"We got no democrat help and I think that's going to cost them very big in the election, because basically they voted against tax cuts", he added.

During his testimony to Congress in June, Comey said Trump asked him in February to drop the FBI investigation into Flynn centering on his calls with Kislyak during the transition.

"Comey wrote in his opening testimony that Trump said: "'I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. According to the newspapers, federal law enforcement officials became concerned that Trump and his supporters could use the exposure of the text messages to attack the credibility of Mueller's investigation.

Trump fired Comey in May.

Mr Flynn, a former Defence Intelligence Agency director, held his position as Mr Trump's national security adviser only for 24 days.

"Immediately upon learning of the allegations, the special counsel's office removed Peter Strzok from the investigation", said Peter Carr, a spokesman for the special counsel's office, said Saturday. When asked if he was anxious what the former national security advisor will tell the special counsel, the president responded, "No, I'm not".

On Saturday morning, he told reporters the White House was "very happy" there was "no collusion" between his campaign and his transition team and the Russians.
