Expect a Bad Flu Season

In honor of our children, we work to increase awareness about the seriousness of the disease and to reduce the number of hospitalizations and deaths caused by the flu each year by increasing vaccination rates. Welltok, the leading consumer health enterprise company, is leveraging its proprietary data and predictive analytics capabilities to help employers, health plans and other population health managers identify and target consumers with a greater risk of getting and spreading the flu.

Fortunately, no other deaths have been reported in connection with the flu.

Among children younger than 18, there had only been 16 cases in the first 11 months of the year, 27 last year and five in 2015, CDC Deputy Director-General Philip Lo (羅一鈞) said. The cost of adult flu vaccine is $25.00.

Therefore, do you think it's worth getting a flu shot this year?

The flu is being seen throughout the country and is very active in the South and New England, but it's not too late to get vaccinated, she said. Some flu shots protect against three flu viruses and some protect against four flu viruses. Consumer lifestyle and demographic data points such as vehicle ownership, political party affiliation and household composition can be early indicators of a person's flu risk.

Flu season is underway, and health officials say there are signs the vaccination may only be 10 percent effective against the main strain.

More than 7,000 cases of the flu have already been confirmed in the U.S.

Dr. Allison McGeer, director of infection control at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, said lab testing in Ontario is turning up "quite a lot of B isolates, almost as many Bs as H3N2".

Usually, a H3N2 portends a severe flu year, but mild H3N2 years have also occurred, she said. "Getting it during the holiday season is even worse", said Chakravarty. "It's best to get it now and not wait until the flu is more widespread", Beard said.

Despite those misgivings, she encourages the elderly and those with underlying heart and lung conditions or with suppressed immune systems, who are vulnerable to influenza and its complications, to get their shot to obtain "all the protection you can get".

If you get sick, look out for severe aches and pains in your muscles and joints, notable fatigue and weakness, headaches and a high fever.
