Jeremy Pruitt set to cash in as Tennessee coach

Pruitt, who has never been a head coach before, interviewed with new Tennessee athletics director Phillip Fulmer twice this week and quickly emerged as a favorite once Fulmer took control of the coaching search.

Pruitt returned to the SEC in 2014 to be the Georgia defensive coordinator for two seasons before landing back in Alabama in 2016 and winning another championship.

The 43-year-old is widely recognized as an excellent recruiter and was a Broyles Award finalist in 2016.

Fulmer interviewed Pruitt on Monday in Dallas and then again Wednesday in NY.

Pruitt can net $300,000 for winning the SEC Championship game and an additional $500,000 if he leads the Volunteers to a national championship. "Now I'm not sure that he can go in and steal Alabama commits this year, especially given the short window of time, but the future is bright from a recruiting standpoint". "I see him getting talent to Tennessee".

Sure, there is always a risk when hiring a head coach, especially one who has no experience, but Pruitt has lived for football, he has been around the best (including his father) and failure is not a word he likes to say or hear. Numerous names emerged throughout the process, including Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, who reportedly accepted the job. North Carolina State's Dave Doeren agreed to a contract with the Wolfpack on Thursday after speaking with Tennessee officials. However, the search for a new coach had been so unsuccessful that it was even jokingly rumored North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un even turned down the job.

It closed the year with a 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt, the fourth time in the last six years the Vols lost to the in-state rival they've historically dominated.

Born in Rainsville, Alabama, Pruitt has lived and worked in the southeast for most of his life.
