Lionsgate pull Gotti biopic starring John Travolta 10 days before release

Lionsgate pull Gotti biopic starring John Travolta 10 days before release

"Lionsgate was planning on a minimal release, and I did an investigation into people who might have the interest and financial wherewithal to better release it", Travolta told Deadline.

"It wasn't easy to get Lionsgate to give it up".

The makers are hunting for a new distributor for the film and looking to release it next year.

One remaining unanswered question here - as mentioned above - is why Emmett/Furla/Oasis made a decision to buy back Gotti so close to its release date.

Helmed by Kevin Connolly, the biopic follows ill-fated mobster John Gotti (Travolta) who rises to the top of the NY underworld to become the boss of the Gambino crime family.

Walson and Travolta revealed they are near a deal with a larger distributor for the film and plan to submit it to the Cannes Film Festival.

Travolta said Gotti is worth a more significant release and so he sought out Edward Walson to buy out Lionsgate for the rights to distribute and promote the film.

Lionsgate has reportedly sold Gotti back to its production company Emmett/Furla/Oasis and they are expected to be seeking new distribution. The movie - which centers around the activities of the Italian Mafia - was canceled just ten days before it hit theaters because of, in Travolta's words, "fake news".

Representatives for Travolta and Connolly did not return EW's request for comment.

Gotti, was directed by Entourage's Kevin Connolly and also stars Travolta's real-life wife Kelly Preston as Victoria Gotti, wife of John. The script was penned by Lem Dobbs (The Limey). Gotti managed to avoid jail time throughout the 1980s but was incarcerated for life in 1992.

You'll have to wait a little longer to see the John Gotti biopic filmed in the Tri-State.

Travolta and Fiore Films were some of the constants as the film become a realization.

John Gotti, right, arrives at court morning of Feb.9, 1990.
