Messi forgoes opportunity to be the world's highest paid player

The Argentine felt that bitterness has led to a certain kind of burden that is not easy to deal with and said: "If Argentina don't do well in this World Cup, we will all have to disappear from the national team".

The 30-year-old retired from worldwide duty after losing the Copa America Centenario final to Chile in 2016, the same side that pipped them to the trophy one year prior.

People get exhausted and want to see new faces and new things in the National Team.

Argentina have been drawn alongside Iceland, Nigeria and Croatia at the World Cup.

"If we do badly, the entire national team will have to disappear. If they have their day, they can score four goals against you", said Messi.

"We were worthy of winning them because, without having played well, we had the clearest [chances] - both in the World Cup and the Copas America".

In wide-ranging interview, Messi also added his voice to calls for Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli to include Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain in his World Cup plans.

"I would have to review them to see what we did wrong so we don't repeat them. However, they also allow you to play; they leave gaps and many spaces are generated".

In October, Maradona backed Higuain to force his way back into the team while Batistuta said the former Real Madrid striker had unfairly been made a scapegoat for Argentina's recent disappointments in major tournaments.

The mercurial playmaker was aware of Argentina's complications and conceeded that there are better teams in the competition. We spoke about it through messages, it was a good thing that he had this period of absence.

"We have crossed paths several times, but have never talked to each other. But he must be in the squad".
