Michael Flynn to Plead Guilty Over False Statements to Federal Bureau of Investigation

"My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel's Office reflect a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country", he said in a statement.

Flynn also agreed to cooperate with Mueller's probe, which focuses on Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible coordination between Russia and Trump's team in the campaign that sent the Republican businessman to the White House.

He added that his actions "were wrong, and, through my faith in God, I am working to set things right".

Flynn rejected claims that he had committed treason, but said he accepts "full responsibility for his actions." .

ABC News, citing an unnamed source, reported that Flynn is prepared to testify Trump "directed him to make contact with the Russians".

Flynn is cooperating with Mueller's office as a condition of his plea deal.

One of the officials, described as a "very senior member" of the presidential transition team, also directed Flynn to contact foreign government officials, including Russia's, about a UN Security Council resolution regarding Israeli settlements.

He was forced to resign that post in February, just weeks after the president took office, due to public concerns over his contacts with Russian Federation.

Afterward, Flynn stood with his back stock-straight between two lawyers as Contreras walked him through the implications of a guilty plea. The indictment specified that Flynn made "false, fictitious and fraudulent statements" when he told Federal Bureau of Investigation agents he hadn't urged Kislyak "to refrain from escalating the situation in response to sanctions that the United States had imposed against Russian Federation that same day".

Early on in is administration, Trump had taken a particular interest in the status of the Flynn investigation.

Mike Flynn has pled guilty to criminal conduct, while he was serving as National Security Adviser to the President of the United States, involving his contact with Russian officials.

Before the vote, the Israeli government lobbied the Obama administration to kill the resolution, but the efforts fell flat.

Flynn did not stop to answer questions from reporters as he left the courtroom, but did issue a written statement to the press.

"The conclusion of this phase of the special counsel's work demonstrates again that the special counsel is moving with all deliberate speed and clears the way for a prompt and reasonable conclusion", Ty Cobb, a White House lawyer, said in a statement.

This guilty plea also comes on the heels of a new report about the President's efforts to silence the independent, bipartisan Senate investigation into ties between Trump associates and Russian Federation.

At the center of this story is a mystery that will propel the rest of the inquiry: What was Trump so anxious about that it made him deny contacts with Russian Federation and denounce attempts to investigate those contacts?

In January, the country's top intelligence chiefs said they had strong evidence showing Moscow had interfered in the campaign, by hacking and disinformation operations, specifically to boost Trump's chances of winning.

Three others have been charged in the Mueller probe.

Warner noted that it's the second Trump campaign associate to plead guilty to making false statements, while former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy are facing a slew of charges. This part of the circle closed Friday, as Mueller obtained a guilty plea from the man Trump had sought to protect from investigation.

But Trump has repeatedly rejected that view.
