Netflix trolls 'A Christmas Prince' die-hard fans, setting social media spinning

The streaming service joked about how much some fans have been watching the movie in a tweet from Sunday. If, down the line, a company like Netflix (or Hulu, or Spotify) wanted to make a personal or political point about your data, technically it could!

Meanwhile, Netflix Canada took it one step further, changing its Twitter display name to "Netflix 'Have You Seen A Christmas Prince?' Canada".

There were some users, however, who seemed happy to engage with the streaming site's tweet, snapping back with their own witty replies, and even joining the Netflix account in a war of words in some cases.

Some are even comparing the tweet to bullying and saying the tweet shamed customers watching the feel-good movie.

But the terrible movie wasn't what drew criticism from Netflix's Twitter followers, it was the fact that they, somehow, had no idea Netflix could monitor the viewing history of its users.

Netflix recently conducted its annual Year in Review to assess the viewing habits of users, and this year they've gathered some pretty interesting results. How is this creepy when their library is public?,' wrote one user.

On Monday, Netflix responded to TheWrap's request for comment on the tweet (and the drama that it ignited).

Still, one person questioned why Netflix would call out people on Twitter.

The tweet was very similar to a campaign that music-streaming service Spotify ran past year, in which it shared insights from consumer data - not naming its users, but sometimes noting individual accounts.

'I guess it's like video store staff, except a massive database means it's easier for creepy Netflix staff to find and creep on individual people they know'.

"People really need to become more cognizant of what data companies are collecting", Shear said.
