Sunil Gulati Won't Seek Re-Election As US Soccer President In 2018

Gulati will remain a powerful voice in U.S. soccer for the time being, as he retains his seat on the FIFA Council and will continue as chair of the joint U.S. -Mexico-Canada bid for the 2026 World Cup, which is widely expected to succeed.

Sunil Gulati is letting go of the reins of soccer in the United States. "But in the end, I think the best thing for me personally, and for the federation, is to see someone new in the job".

The 58-year-old Gulati has been a driving force in the USSF for more than 30 years.

One day after current president Sunil Gulati announced he would not seek another term at the position, the field grew by one as Soccer United Marketing president Kathy Carter announced her intent to seek the position. Klinsmann was given his marching orders earlier this year after putting the USMNT in a precarious position during World Cup qualifiers and Gulati made a decision to turn to Bruce Arena to steady the ship, much to the consternation of the soccer faithful in the country. She has also been involved in the organization of multiple women's World Cups. However, he decided against it on Monday, telling ESPN the federation needed new blood in the position.

"I will empower [U.S. Soccer secretary general] Dan Flynn and the staff of the Federation to do the job they have been hired to do", she said. "I've got 25 years of walking the hallways with soccer as my business".

"I'm excited to announce my candidacy for President of US Soccer", Carter said. They both now work as analysts on NBC and Fox Sports respectively and will again offer a unique perspective on what is needed for the country to move forward as a soccer nation. It's about 4 million registered players, referees, medical safety, grassroots stuff.

Keep in mind, the men's national team is also still looking for a new coach; head coach Bruce Arena resigned shortly after his team missed the World Cup. "This is about me being the most qualified person to lead the federation into the next generation". When quizzed about Cordeiro's choice to possibly run, all Gulati would say was that it had been an "interesting set of discussions".
