Wildfires lead to hellish scenes for Los Angeles commuters

Those winds have since settled down, according to Curbed, but mandatory evacuation orders were issued for an area of Bel Air south of Mulholland Drive, North Sunset Boulevard, the 405 and west of Roscomare Road, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Both lanes of the 405 Freeway were closed as a result of the fire.

Wind-whipped wildfires were tearing through neighborhoods in northern Los Angeles County, blackening more than 4,500 acres and destroying multiple homes. "It's critical residents stay ready and evacuate immediately if told to do so".

As of 10:30 p.m. ET Tuesday night, the fire remained zero percent contained, according to the L.A. Fire Department. "We don't want to hamper our personnel and not send them".

LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas warned that the battle was likely to continue until at least Friday. She and her family were given just enough time to gather some necessities but not their horses, Padilla said.

Mandatory Evacuations are in effect.

Evacuation centers have been established at Delano Recreation Center, 15100 Erwin St., Van Nuys; Balboa RC, 17015 Burbank Blvd., Van Nuys; Sherman Oaks RC, 14201 Huston St., Sherman Oaks; and Westwood RC, 1350 Sepulveda Blvd., Westwood.

Most people living in the hills of Los Angeles knew what to do, she said, but it was an especially trying time for people new to the area. Once those shelters reached capacity, pet owners were directed to take their large animals to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.

All Santa Monica-Malibu Los Angeles Unified School District schools will be closed Wednesday due to the fire. The southbound lanes of the 405 have since reopened. Los Angeles Mission College's Main Campus at 13356 Eldridge Ave. and the East Campus at 12890 Harding St., both in Sylmar, were closed for the day, but there was no immediate word if classes would resume today.
