The heroine was given extra-dimensional powers when she tried to keep a weapon from being created, and Monica became a hero who operated under the name Captain Marvel. There is no word on what her role will be, but there has been some speculation about who it could be.

While Rambeau was a favorite as Captain Marvel, most fans know her as the leader for the hilarious 12-issue-epic known as Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. A police lieutenant from New Orleans, she possesses the ability to transform herself into any form of energy. Out of Marvel's 21 films, this is the first to feature a female lead superhero, unless you count the upcoming Ant-Man & The Wasp, which features former Lost star Evangeline Lilly co-starring with Paul Rudd. The resulting adjustment imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection and flight. Samuel L. Jackson will be reprising his role as Nick Fury, Jude Law has signed on to play Marvell, and Ben Mendelsohn, and now Dewanda Wise in unspecified roles. From what we know about Captain Marvel, Monica's addition would make a lot of sense. It will be part of the MCU's expansion into its "cosmic" universe, dealing with the menacing Kree alien race and an origin story that involves alien DNA being fused with our hero.

Captain Marvel has been said to start filming some time this month for its March 8, 2019 release.
