Ford Enters Performance SUV Segment With 355-Horsepower 2019 Edge ST

For the first time since its inception, the Edge will be offered in ST trim, making it the first high-performance crossover sold under the Ford nameplate.

"We sold over 140,000 Edges past year, a fair portion of those were Edge Sports, but this really takes that to another level", Nair said.

The 2019 Ford Edge goes on sale this summer.

Following CEO Jim Hackett's mantra - smart vehicles for a smart world - the 2019 Edge is outfitted with a full suite of driver-assist features.

Raj Nair, the president of North American operations at Ford, said during an interview that the automaker is planning to be much more aggressive in the standardizing of features that assist the driver. There are also additional standard perks - forward collision warning, pre-collision assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. The former helps reduce the impact of a potential secondary collision by automatically applying moderate brake pressure after an initial collision. There's also available adaptive cruise-control and lane-centering features.

The designer of the new vehicle, Steve Gilmore, indicates that the auto was styled to appear "sinister", being engineered on track.

Sadly, though, it doesn't seem as though Ford has made the same earnest attempt to create a fun, engaging performance crossover like, say, Nissan did with the Juke Nismo. That variant, fettled by the Ford Performance team, gets an updated version of the 2.7-litre turbocharged V6 Ecoboost engine that debuted in the Sport, now pumping out 264kW and 515Nm, connected to an eight-speed auto with all-wheel drive. This engine delivers 335 horsepower and 380lb-ft of torque (20 more horsepower and 30lb-ft more torque than the Edge Sport) to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and an advanced all-wheel-drive system. Wheel-mounted paddle shifters are standard on ST. Currently, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SRT models start above $64,000; if the Edge ST comes in for significantly less, it may find a small but devoted audience. A Sport mode calls up optimal engine and transmission performance to hold gears near redline when cornering and will rev-match for downshifts.

Inside, a redesigned center console is accentuated by an all-new rotary gearshift dial that frees up space, allows easier access to the wireless charging pad and enhances the vehicle's modern, sophisticated feel.
