'Jumanji' Powers Solid Holiday Weekend With $35.4 Million

"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" has brought in a massive 283.17 million dollars in total in North American theatres to date since opening on December 20, according to the studio figures collected by comScore.

Hong Kong action-comedy Keep Calm And Be A Superstar, starring Eason Chan, opened in forth with $5.3 million, while Feng Xiaogang's hit period drama Youth landed in fifth in its fifth weekend, adding $2 million and nudging its total to $217.1 million. The movie features Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks as publisher Katharine Graham and executive editor Ben Bradlee.

Fox has been slowly rolling out the Oscar contender to build word-of-mouth, and is hoping for attention from the Academy Awards to give it a long tail. While such films are often low-revenue, art-house features, a savvy release strategy can boost public interest and tickets sales.

It is "a solid Martin Luther King Weekend that should generate around 152 million dollars for the 3-day and a projected 4-day total of 187 to 190 million dollars", wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.

The film received highly positive reviews with a strong "A" rating from moviegoers on CinemaScore. The opening of Lionsgate's Liam Neeson's thriller "The Commuter" also topped expectations in third with $16.4 million at 2,892 venues, followed by Fox's fourth weekend of "The Greatest Showman" with $15.6 million at 2,938 screens.

"Jumanji" will finish the holiday with $291.6 million in 29 days, now ranking as the eighth highest grosser released in 2017.

"Paddington 2", a sequel to the Warner Bros. PADDINGTON is based on the best-selling and internationally adored series of children's stories by British author Michael Bond, which have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, been translated into over 40 languages and captured the imagination of children and adults around the globe.
