MI stores in new round of Sears & Kmart closings

In a news release, company officials said the closings were part of Sears Holdings' continuing assessment of the productivity of its store base. Some eligible associates will receive a severance and may be allowed to apply at other locations.

The Sears location in San Angelo was included in a previous round of corporate closings. There are about 40 employees, made up of full-time and part-time positions, who will be affected.

Ross Township Commission President Stephen Korbel shares the same sentiments.

"We're encouraging housing units, we're encouraging office space, encouraging more restaurants, etc", said Korbel.

Sears had owned the 143,000-square-foot space since 2000.

Liquidation sales will begin as early as January 12 at the closing stores. The Rapid City Sears store is on the list, one of the latest round of store closures by the struggling retailer.
