Nominees, Industry React — BAFTA Awards

"We're so delighted to have been recognised by BAFTA for our debut film", said William Oldroyd (Director), Alice Birch (Writer) and Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly (Producer).

Indeed, "The Post" - which earned six Golden Globe nominations but left empty-handed - failed to score a single BAFTA nod, a surprising turn given the pedigree of Spielberg and stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks as well as the film's timely story of a fierce struggle between presidential power and press freedom.

Both movies will compete for best film.

The lead characters in "The Shape of Water" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", however, are women.

Guillermo del Toro's fantastical thriller is nominated in 12 categories, including best picture and best director.

"It's a really broad mix of established and emerging talent", said BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after the nominations announcement.

"We too are determined to ensure that the fearless revelations - and make no mistake, they were very courageous - become a watershed moment to become a catalyst for real lasting change across the work place in film, games and television".

"It's not only MeToo, but it's WeToo", she said. All except Bening had received Golden Globe nominations as well.

BAFTA also nominated First They Killed My Father for Film Not In The English Language.

The film is nominated for several awards. Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson both received nominations for supporting actor.

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is a film about a mother, frustrated with a police investigation into her daughter's death, who goes to great length to push authorities to catch the killer. The former is up for best film and Frances McDormand for leading actress.

Joanna Lumley has been confirmed as the host of the 2018 Baftas, after Stephen Fry stepped down.

The awards take place at London's Royal Albert Hall on 18 February.
