Prosecutors In South Korea Now Investigating iPhone Batterygate

The issue struck a nerve on social media, where many voiced a theory that Apple intentionally slows down older phones to encourage customers to buy new ones.

"We are aiming to give the public the ability to be informed about the health of their device's battery", Cook said in an interview with the ABC television network.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, whose reputation is on the line over the issue, has now revealed Apple will embark on something which "hasn't been done before" he said. Instead, it was an attempt to manage inevitable battery degradation by slowing down certain processes.

"It's very transparent. This hasn't been done before". And, we will tell somebody that we're reducing your performance by some amount in order to not have an unexpected restart.

If you are a developer and want to install iOS 11.2.5 beta 7 on your iOS device, check out Apple Developer website or you can directly install over the air if your device is already registered with the beta configuration profile. Now we don't recommend it because we think people's iPhones are really important to them and you never can tell when something is so urgent. "Maybe we should have been clearer as well". I can't stress that enough. But for those of you who would like to check the health and current status of your battery, that is not an option you can see. (Apple is also facing probes in Italy and France.) With the release of iOS 10.2.1 in 2016, Apple indeed touched on reduced shutdowns and deeper battery management - but any update that eventually slows down a very expensive smartphone deserved a more up front, obvious explanation.

Having your iPhone battery replaced should do the trick, according to Apple.

While the apology added that Apple was dropping the charge of out-of-warranty battery replacements from $79 to $29, the announcement did not include Cook's claim about disabling the throttling issue in the future. Apple users in India can get their iPhone battery (iPhone 6 and above all eligible) for Rs 2000 plus taxes till December 2018. Up to 50% of performance may be affected, but Apple still believes that this is the best way to keep older devices running for longer.

The latest update on the iOS11 is expected to arrive this March.
