Road accident on Delhi-Chandigarh highway kills four powerlifting players

Yadav and Rohit were rushed to Max Hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh.

The powerlifters were travelling from Panipat to Delhi in their auto, which smashed into a road divider.

"The incident came to light after we received information from passerby regarding accident near Singhu Border at around 4.14 am on Sunday".

Two other players including a world champion who bagged the title for India in Moscow previous year, were injured in the accident.

Saksham Yadav died in the evening at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre here. The cause of the accident is said to be dense fog that continues to blanket Delhi-NCR amid the intensifying cold wave conditions.

A Delhi Police official identified the dead as Tikamchand, 27, Yogesh, 24, Harish Roy, 20, and Saurabh, 18.

Four players died while Yadav and another weightlifter were seriously injured.

A senior doctor at the AIIMS trauma said that Mr. Yadav's condition is extremely critical.

"The impact of crash was so severe that the vehicle rolled over several times with its roof getting completely blown off, before hitting a pole and killing four of them on the spot". Saksham had also won a gold medal in the junior category in 2016.

It was Mr. Rohit's birthday and the friends were celebrating it, the police said. The athlete had sustained grievous head injuries and severe internal bleeding. Some bottles were also found in the vehicle indicating the possibility of drunk driving. Due to the impact of the crash, the car's roof was shattered.
