Robert Whittaker Injured & Off UFC 221, Interim Champion To Be Crowned

UFC 221 will go down in Perth, Australia on February 10th. It was the former champ's first fight since losing his middleweight belt to Bisping at UFC 199 in June of 2016.

Robert Whittaker, right, is announced the victor by unanimous decision against Yoel Romero in the UFC 213 interim middleweight title bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Saturday, July 8, 2017.

News broke earlier today that UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (19-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) had sustained an injury and will be unable to defend his title at UFC 221 in Perth.

Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has been forced out of the main event due to an undisclosed injury. "I've been ruled medically unable to compete and won't be able to defend on home soil", Whittaker said on Instagram.

Whittaker had held an interim title until Georges St. Pierre vacated the middleweight belt in December and Whittaker, a Sydney resident, was promoted to outright champion. "I hope the fans enjoy what should be a great night of fights at UFC 221, and I look forward to a recovery as soon as possible that will have me back in the Octagon to face the victor of the main event". In a very active division, Rockhold and Romero have never faced each other. UFC officials told ESPN that Whittaker will face the victor in a unification bout.

In the short term, despite being well-tailored to the local audience, UFC 221 was a one-fight card for the rest of the world.

UFC Fight Night in Orlando is scheduled for February 24, with the first fights at 3:30 p.m. and the main events on the Fox network (WOFL-35 locally) beginning at 8 p.m. All I can do is focus on getting healthy to come back better than ever. "All the best to Yoel and Luke for their fight and I'll be waiting..."
