Samsung freezes out Alexa, opts for Bixby in Family Hub smart fridges

Ahead of its big press event, Samsung held a preview event at CES where it announced Bixby would be coming to its Family Hub fridge and lineup of 2018 Smart TVs.

With four new models coming later in 2018, Samsung brings the total to 14 Family Hub refrigerators, though as of now they all cost over $3,000. It can help you stay connected, organized, and entertained. In October of a year ago, Samsung announced Bixby 2.0, which would take Bixby beyond phones and into its entire ecosystem of smart things. The company will be showing off the new Family Hub refrigerator this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show so watch out for that one fridge that integrates Samsung's SmartThings IoT ecosystem and Bixby. SmartThings Cloud would allow people to control all their Internet-of-Things devices from a single app, instead of having one for each gadget.

Now, let it be known that a Family Hub fridge is not cheap, with prices ranging from around $2,000 to almost $4,000. We just don't think it has the same power just yet, despite its integration with Samsung SmartThings and other recently shown off developments such as individual voice control.

For instance, you can use the fridge to see who rang the doorbell, adjust your thermostat, and even check on a sleeping baby in the next room. Samsung has also added two new food-centric apps: Meal Planner is a food management app that provides recipes while accounting for food preferences and dietary restrictions.

Ask "Hi Bixby, what's new today?" and she'll read out news, weather, and calendar updates. Users can access millions of songs through various music streaming platforms and live radio apps, and mirror their Samsung Smart TV1.

If you don't fancy hearing all the awful meetings you have coming up then you might want to use the speaker system, which can stream music directly from your connected smartphone to be broadcast through the high-quality AKG speakers built into the doors.
