Sony sold 5.9 million more PS4s over the holidays

The Sony PlayStation 4 has been the most successful console in this generation, handily outselling its Microsoft Xbox One counterpart since the beginning.

The PS4 sold more than 5.9 million units during holiday 2017 alone.

Although this isn't really a patch on the 70 million PS4 consoles that have been sold to date, it is a large enough install base for Sony to justify investing development money as well as draw in more third-party developers. The company added that more than 73.6 million PS4 consoles have been sold to fans across the world since its launch in 2013. The biggest sign of the hybrid console's inevitable rise to supremacy was beating the Wii's 10-month sales numbers, with 4.8 million units sold in the USA alone.

Sony also announced that PlayStation Network's subscriber numbers are now above 31.5 million and that its digital PlayStation Store recorded its best sales month in December, though no numbers were provided. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our community and our partners for helping us achieve such phenomenal milestones. Despite this, software sales have actually gone up by 5.5 million, with 645 million PS4 games being sold in total. Nintendo estimates it'll sell around 14 million Switch consoles in its first year, while Sony's expecting to move a whopping 18 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the same amount of time.

One thing is for certain, the presence of video games was larger compared to a year ago when we saw just a quick shot at the PS4 Pro, PlayStation VR, and a couple of seconds of PlayStation VR Worlds.
