Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist, steps down from Breitbart News

For Stephen Colbert, Christmas came a few weeks late in the form of Michael Wolff's juicy new book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.

With a tell-all book raising concerns about US President Trump's mental stability, there is a renewed question asking why the most powerful man in the world is not required to pass a thorough mental health exam.

But as he returned to his job at Breitbart, which he had overseen as executive chairman since 2012, he and Trump remained friendly, and Bannon had high hopes that he would continue as one of America's leading policy minds with the president's ear.

"Bannon and Breitbart will work together on a smooth and orderly transition", the outlet announced in a statement. "They didn't have any lawyers", Bannon apparently said at the time.

According to Wolff, Bannon said that special counsel Robert Mueller's team, which is investigating Russian interference into the 2016 election, would "crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV".

In another quote from the book attributed to Bannon, he predicted authorities would get Don Jr.

Bannon has tried to make amends.

Excerpts from the book started surfacing last week and Trump and White House staffers spent most of last week denying most of Wolff's descriptions of an Oval Office in tumoil and a president coming unhinged. He issued a statement Sunday praising the president's eldest son.

The White House did not immediately respond to the news of Bannon's ouster, but press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders last week called on the conservative site - which has been a steadfast backer of the president - to "look at and consider" parting ways with Bannon. On Monday, a White House spokesperson said there was no "way back" for Bannon; on Tuesday, he was gone from Breitbart.
